Portland cement concrete is the most widespread building material in the world.
Concrete can be considered a compound material in which cement and water constitute the continuous matrix or pulp, that is reinforced with the addition of ""aggregates"" (sand, metaling).
Until 1930 the composition of concrete was restricted to three components: cement, water and aggregates. The need to improve its performance in the wet and/or hardened state to make it suitable for particular or specific applications that would otherwise be impossible and the need to cast it led to the development of additives, commonly known as ""Chemical Additives"".
Chemical additives are usually constituted by a carefully balanced blend of components that lend the concrete properties that allow it to satisfy the necessary performance.
